NID Graduation Film
An unusual story of a dreamer.
It’s a tale of a woman living in her own bubble and version of reality. The narrative through the protagonist keeps introspecting and questioning an innocent feeling of absolute happiness, a desire that has taken form inside her again. She feels complete and brimming with a blissful feeling and questions that. This feeling takes over her mind, heart and body until the bubble bursts and she is face to face with the reality of her life.
Khwabida is the story of Mihika. It is human psyche to believe only that aspect of reality that we want to. We exaggerate things, we choose to see what we want, we are the beings who weave illusions in our psyches and live by it. This is our bubble of being. But reality is all powerful. Life will come in the way. So there will come a moment when life will catch hold of us from the clouds of dreams we have woven and thrash us down to the ground of our own reality. The time when we are forced to deal with the mess we have created and get our ducks in line. This was the basic idea for this film. Living in the bubble of your own with a twist of the emotional journey or rather a tirade that a desire can send a woman into. Happiness and desire go hand in hand for her. The story starts where this feeling of absolute bliss is pleasing and reaches a point where the feeling doesn’t feel natural, pleasing or positive anymore.
The narrative of the film comprised of mental soliloquies exposed as rhapsodic outbursts of a woman who is in all reality trapped within a construct of femininity and patriarchal order. Her life till now has been designed and handed over to her by the society, these are the beginning steps where she craves to take control of her life back. The protagonist, Mihika, does feel drawn towards another woman. The basic thought was to show that initial stage of attraction where we build a world in our head without paying much attention to what is going on in reality. The idea was also to create a comfortable dialogue about homosexual desire of a woman towards another woman. The story consciously doesn’t go deeper into the lives of any characters. The narrative is as a person’s perspective would be clouded with attraction. A lot of information is not given out any point, just as the character is, the story limits itself just as when a sense of clarity begins to emerge.
Khwabida, in a nutshell, is woman’s way of telling her own story without narrating it. She is letting the viewer be a part of her world and experience the emotions she feels as and when she feels them, with her. She allows the viewer to walk with her, understand her conflicts with her, for a day be with her as she lives her mundane life.
